Royal Bank of Canada, BJ’s Wholesale Club Net Rises

Royal Bank of Canada first quarter revenues rose 3% to $7.3 billion and net income rose 33.6% to $1.43 billion or $1.00 a share. BJ’s Wholesale Club fourth quarter sales rose 9.6% to $2.74 billion and net income rose 4.5% to $55.1 million or $1.01 a share.

Big Lots, Inc (BIG: chart), the closeout retailer reported fourth quarter sales rose 6.5% to $1.46 billion from $1.37 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 34% to $105.4 million or $1.27 per diluted share compared to net income of $78.8 million or 96 cents per share a year ago.

Comparable same-stores sales increased 5.1%.

Net sales for the year 2009 rose 1.7% to $4.73 billion from $4.65 billion a year ago. Net income for the year rose 32% to $200.4 million or $2.42 per diluted share compared to net income of $151.5 million or $1.85 per share a year ago.

Big Lots, Inc, in the last one year traded as high as $34.55 in March 2010 and as low as $13.83 in March 2009. Based on the yesterday’s closing price of $33.94 the company has market cap of $2.81 billion.

BJ’s Wholesale Club (BJ: chart), the warehouse club operator reported fourth quarter sales rose 9.6% to $2.74 billion from $2.50 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 4.5% to $55.1 million or $1.01 per diluted share compared to net income of $52.7 million or 91 cents per share a year ago.

Comparable same-stores sales increased 4.6%.

Net sales for the year 2009 rose 1.5% to $9.95 billion from $9.80 billion a year ago. Net income for the year fell 2% to $132.1 million or $2.42 per diluted share compared to net income of $134.6 million or $2.28 per share a year ago.

BJ’s Wholesale Club, in the last one year traded as high as $39.59 in May 2009 and as low as $27.26 in March 2009. Based on the yesterday’s closing price of $36.47 the company has market cap of $2.03 billion.

Brown Shoe Company, Inc (BWS: chart), a footwear company reported fourth quarter sales rose 8.6% to $566.0 million from $521.0 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter was $5.0 million or 12 cents per diluted share compared to net loss of $153.0 million or $3.68 per share a year ago.

Net sales for the year 2009 fell 2% to $2.24 billion from $2.28 billion a year ago. Net income for the year was $9.5 million or 22 cents per diluted share compared to net loss of $133.2 million or $3.21 per share a year ago.

Brown Shoe Company, Inc, in the last one year traded as high as $14.59 in February 2010 and as low as $2.04 in March 2009. Based on the yesterday’s closing price of $14.33 the company has market cap of $614.35 million.

Maidenform Brands, Inc (MFB: chart), a marketer of intimate apparel products reported fourth quarter sales rose 15% to $109.1 million from $94.8 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 221% to $7.7 million or 32 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $2.4 million or 10 cents per share a year ago.

Net sales for the year 2009 rose 13% to $466.3 million from $413.5 million a year ago. Net income for the year rose 50% to $37.0 million or $1.56 per diluted share compared to net income of $24.7 million or $1.05 per share a year ago.

Maidenform Brands, Inc, in the last one year traded as high as $17.97 in March 2010 and as low as $7.83 in March 2009. Based on the yesterday’s closing price of $17.90 the company has market cap of $414.53 million.
