Summary
New orders for manufactured goods in November, up two of the last three months, increased $3.4 billion or 0.9% to $394.3 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau reported today. This followed a 4.5 percent October decrease. Shipments, up three of the last four months, increased $0.4 billion or 0.1 percent to $390.0 billion. This followed a 0.1% October increase. Unfilled orders, up eighteen of the last nineteen months, increased $11.3 billion or 1.7% to $678.6 billion.
This was at the highest level since the series was first stated on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 1.4% October increase. The unfilled orders-to-shipments ratio was 4.64, up from 4.58 in October. Inventories, up thirteen of the last fourteen months, increased $1.1 billion or 0.2 percent to $481.9 billion. This followed a 0.3% October increase. The inventories-to-shipments ratio was 1.24, up from 1.23 in October.
New Orders
New orders for manufactured durable goods in November, up three of the last four months, increased $3.3 billion or 1.6% to $213.8 billion, revised from the previously published 1.9% increase. This followed an 8.1% October decrease.New orders for manufactured nondurable goods increased slightly to $180.5 billion.
Shipments
Shipments of manufactured durable goods in November, up three of the last four months, increased $0.3 billion or 0.2% to $209.5 billion, revised from the previously published 0.1% increase. This followed a 0.2% October increase.
Shipments of manufactured nondurable goods, up following three consecutive monthly decreases, increased slightly to $180.5 billion. This was due to petroleum and coal products, which increased $1.0 billion or 3.1% to $32.0 billion.
Unfilled Orders
Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in November, up eighteen of the last nineteen months, increased $11.3 billion or 1.7% to $678.6 billion, unchanged from the previously published increase. This was at the highest level since the series began and followed a 1.4% October increase.
Inventories
Inventories of manufactured durable goods in November, up ten of the last eleven months, increased $0.8 billion or 0.3% to $294.6 billion, unchanged from the previously published increase. This followed a 0.8% October increase.
Inventories of manufactured nondurable goods, up following two consecutive monthly decreases, increased $0.3 billion or 0.2% to $187.3 billion. This was led by food products, which increased $0.2 billion or 0.7% to $34.5 billion.
By stage of fabrication, November materials and supplies increased 0.1% in durable goods and 0.5% in nondurable goods. Work in process increased 0.2% in durable goods and 0.2% in nondurable goods. Finished goods increased 0.5 percent in durable goods and decreased 0.1% in nondurable goods.
