CTI Industries Rises to a Quarterly Profit

CTI Industries achieved net income against the net loss in the same quarter a year ago, generated from the settlement of certain obligations of a Mexican subsidiary. TransDigm revenue grew 10% on growth in the company’s original equipment manufacturer and commercial aftermarket businesses. J.M. Smucker earnings slipped nearly 2%, hurt by lower sales and restructuring and other charges.

 
CTI Industries Corp. (CTIB: chart), balloons and packaging products maker, reported third-quarter net earnings of $315,000, or 15 cents per share compared with a net loss of $416,267, or 21 cents per share in the same quarter last year. Revenue climbed to $8.6 million from $6.03 million in the same quarter a year earlier.

TransDigm Corp. (TDG: chart), aircraft component maker, reported net income of $15.2 million, or 32 cents per share, compared with $10 million, or 22 cents per share a year ago. Revenue grew 10% to $115.9 million from $105 million last year on company’s growth in the original equipment manufacturer and commercial aftermarket businesses.

J.M. Smucker Company (SJM: chart), jams and jellies producer, said second-quarter net income declined to $45.6 million, or 80 cents per share, from $46.4 million, or 79 cents per share, in the year-ago period. Excluding items, net income fell to 83 cents a share from 86 cents a share last year. Revenue was $605.0 million, down from $606.3 million a year ago.

Kirkland''s Inc. (KIRK: chart), home accessories seller, said that its third-quarter loss widened to $2.9 million, or 15 cents per share, from a year-ago loss of $2.5 million, or 13 cents per share. The quarterly results include a non-cash pre-tax charge of $700,000, or 2 cents per share, related to the impairment of certain fixed assets. Revenue jumped 6.2% to $95.8 million from $90.2 million in the same period a year earlier. Same-store sales declined 6.7% in the latest quarter.

Citi Trends Inc. (CTRN: chart), urban fashion apparel and accessories retailer, said that its third-quarter earnings rose to $2.8 million, or 20 cents per share, compared with a year-ago profit of $2.6 million, or 18 cents per share. Revenue climbed 24.6% to $87.1 million from $69.9 million in the same period a year earlier. Same-store sales increased 6.2% in the latest quarter.

Ann Taylor Stores Corp. (ANN: chart), women''s specialty retailer, said that its third-quarter earnings increased to $39.3 million, or 54 cents per share, compared with a year-ago profit of $30.3 million, or 42 cents per share. Revenue climbed 10.2% to $566.3 million from $514 million in the same period a year earlier. Same-store sales rose 2.6% in the latest quarter.

United Retail Group (URGI: chart), clothing chain that sells to plus-sized women, said that its third-quarter net income declined 41% to $1.09 million, or 8 cents per share, with 6% higher revenue of $104 million. Quarterly profit was hurt by compensation expense and stock appreciation rights expense, as well as a $1.5 million tax provision.
