Amazon Sales Rise; Microsoft Net Drops 32%

Amazon.com, Inc first quarter revenues rose 18% to $4.89 billion and net income rose 24% to $177 million or 41 cents a share. Microsoft Corporation third quarter revenues fell 6% to $13.65 billion and net income fell 32% to $2.98 billion or 33 cents a share.

Amazon.com, Inc, the Seattle-based online retailer said first quarter revenues rose 18% to $4.89 billion from $4.13 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 24% to $177 million or 41 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $143 million or 34 cents per share, a year ago.

Amazon.com, Inc (AMZN: chart) in the last one year traded as high as $91.75 in April 2008 and as low as $34.68 in November 2008. Based on the yesterday’s closing price $80.61 the company has market cap of $34.62 billion.

American Express Company, the credit card lender said first quarter revenues fell 18% to $5.9 billion from $7.2 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter fell 63% to $361 million or 31 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $985 million or 85 cents per share, a year ago.

Net loss in the quarter was $1.81 million or 1 cent per diluted share compared to net income of $35.9 million or 21 cents per share, a year ago.

Net sales for the fiscal year 2008 fell 14.2% to $1.39 billion from $1.62 billion a year ago. Net income fell 46% to $80.8 million or 47 cent per diluted share compared to net income of $149.5 million or 87 cents per share, a year ago.

AVX Corporation (AVX: chart) in the last one year traded as high as $14.00 in April 2008 and as low as $7.10 in January 2009. Based on the yesterday’s closing price $10.15 the company has market cap of $1.73 billion.

The Chubb Corporation, the property and casualty insurance provider said first quarter net written premiums fell 7% to $2.74 billion from $2.94 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter fell 48.6% to $341 million or 95 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $664 million or $1.77 per share, a year ago.

Delphi Financial Group, Inc, a employee-insurance provider said first quarter revenues rose 8.3% to $398.6 million from $368.2 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 16% to $24.5 million or 51 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $21.1 million or 42 cents per share, a year ago.
