Record Close in S&P 500

U.S. September employment report showed a healthy gains in payroll lifting the market indexes in the U.S. and Europe. Dow Jones reached intra-day high and S&P 500 closed at a record high. U.S. stocks gained for the fourth week in a row. Merrill Lynch will write-down mortgage bonds portfolio by $5.5 billion and report a loss of 50 cents in the third quarter. Washington Mutual said that earnings will be lowered 75% due to $975 million losses in mortgage business. Research in Motion jumped 13%.

 
4:30PM New York, 10:30 PM Frankfurt, 2:00AM Mumbai – U.S. employment report showed a healthy rise in September jobs lifting indexes in the U.S. and Europe. S&P 500 and Dow close at a record high. Brazil jump more than 3%.

Markets and Indexes

Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 91.70 or 0.66% to a record close 14, 066.01, S&P 500 increased 14.75 or 0.96% to 1,557.59, and Nasdaq Composite Index traded up 46.75 or 1.71% to a record close of 1,557.59. In Toronto TSX Composite gained 96.79 or 0.69% to close at a six year high of 14,221.90.

Of the 30 stocks in Dow Jones Industrial Average 24 closed higher, 5 closed lower, and one was unchanged. Alcoa led the gainers with a rise of $1.13 or 3% to $38.70 followed by increase in General Motors of 2.3%, in American Express of 2.2%, and in Caterpillar of 2.1%. Boeing led the decliners with a fall of 2.1% followed by losses in Verizon of 0.44%, and in Intel of 0.2%.

Of the stocks in S&P 500 430 closed higher, 67 fell, and 3 closed unchanged. Fifty nine stocks rose 3% or more and only one stock fell 3% or more. Tellabs led the decliners with a fall of 4.5% followed by losses in Weatherford International of 2.9%, in Nabor Industries of 2.7%, and in Boeing of 2.1%.

Ashland led the gainers with a sharp rise of 6.1% or $3.73 to $65.10 followed by increases in Burlington Northern of 5.8%, in Office Depot of 5.8%, and in Robert Half of 5.7%. Sears Holdings jumped 5.5% and Janus Capital increased 5.3%.

In London FTSE 100 Index edged higher by 47.90 or 0.73% to 6,595.80, in Paris CAC 40 index rose 38.85 or 0.67% to close at 5,843.24, and in Frankfurt DAX index increased 0.72% or 57.19 to close at 8,002.18. In Zurich trading SMI added 0.24% or 21.99 to close at 9,075.35.

In Tokyo stock market Nikkei 225 index fell 0.16% or 27.45 to close at 17,065.04, in Hong Kong Hang Seng index closed up 3.18% or 857.54 to 26,973.98, in Australia ASX 200 closed up 0.59% or 38.50 to a close of 6,605.40, Sensex fell 3.80 or 0.02% to 17,773.36. In South Korea Kospi index declined 0.38% or 7.57 to 1,996.03.

In Latin Markets Brazil led the gainers with a sharp rise of 3.2% followed by increases of 1.9% in Chile, 1.5% in Mexico, 1.44% in Venezuela, and 1.01% in Colombia.

In Brazil, iBovespa Index closed 3.2% higher or 1,912.00 to close at 62,318.72 and in Mexico Bolsa index rose 1.49% or 462.61 to close at 31,540.94.

Of the 63 stocks in iBovespa index in Brazil, 56 gained, 4 lost, and 3 closed unchanged. Usiminas led the gainers with a rise of 6.3% to R 138.00 followed by gains in Sidurcia Nacional of 5.9%, in Unibanco and Bradesco of 5%.

Bond Yields increased on 10-year U.S. bonds to 4.64% and 30-year bond fell to close at 4.87%.

Commodities, Metals, and Currencies

Crude oil fell $0.22 to close at $81.22 per barrel for a front month contract, up 33% for the year, natural gas fell 33 cents to $7.07 per mBtu, and gasoline futures decreased 0.29 cents to close at 204.93 cents per gallon.

Gold added $3.40 in New York trading to close at $747.20 per ounce, silver closed down 1 cent to $13.49 per ounce, and copper for front month delivery in London gained $108.00 to $8,251.00 per pound.

Dollar edged lower against euro to $1.4134 from $1.4136 and higher to 117.005 yen from 116.84 yen.

U.S. Earnings Watch

Merrill Lynch said that it will write down its portfolio of subprime mortgage and asset backed loans by $4.5 billion and take additional charge of $967 million for underwriting fees for the financial lending commitment. Merrill also guided a loss of 50 cents in the third quarter.

Washington Mutual said that its earnings are likely to be lower by 75% on the charges and write downs in the mortgage portfolio and mortgage related securities trading.

Research in Motion reported second quarter earnings of 50 cents compared to 25 cents a year ago. The stock jumped 13% on the news.
