Chrysler Shines in 2011, GM Leads Auto Sales

2:55 PM New York U.S. auto sales were ahead of expectations in the December month and in the year 2011. General Motors led the industry with unit sales of 2.5 million but Chrysler gains topped with an increase of 26%. Toyota and Honda registered sales decline on supply chain problems.

U.S. auto sales continued their upswing in December and sales were ahead of expectations set by Ticker.com in the year 2011.

Total light vehicle sales increased 8.6% in December and for the year surged 10.3% as consumers opted for bigger vehicles. Total light vehicle sales in the month were 561,567 and for the year were 1.24 million.

Sales of passenger cars rose 7.5% in the month and gained 8.9% in the year and light truck sales increased 9.6% in the month and gained 11.6% in the year.

In December passenger car sales increased to 561,567 and for the year sales rose to 6.24 million. For the month, light truck sales increased to 682,166 and for the year surged to 6.54 million.

Auto sales in November increased 10%, in October were flat and in September declined 3.7%. Sales in the year were expected to increase more than 10% to above 12.5 million units.

Three domestic auto makers benefited from the weak production and demand for Japanese auto makers. Toyota and Honda suffered from the parts shortages as factories in Thailand remain shut after flood waters ravage one third of the nation.

For 2011, Toyota sales declined 6.7%, Honda sales fell 6.8% but Nissan sales soared 14.7%. For the year General Motors led the industry with unit sales of 2.5 million followed by Ford sales of 2.1 million and Toyota sales of 1.4 million.

The monthly data are released by the industry research organization Autodata Corp based in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey.

Seasonally adjusted annual sales rate in December increased to 13.56 million from 13.63 million in November and from 12.51 million in the month a year ago.

In December, total light vehicle sales increased 8.6% to 1,243,733 from 1,144,739 from a year ago period. Passenger car sales in the month gained 7.5% to 561,567 from 522,385 and light truck sales increased 9.6% to 682,166 from 622,354.

For the year unit sales for General Motors rose 13.2%, Ford Motor sales increased 11% and Chrysler sales soared 26.2%.

Chrysler Sales Surge 26%, GM Sales Rise 13%

General Motors (GM) sales increased 4.6% to 234,351 from 224,147. Sales of light vehicles increased 1.7% to 163,888 from 161,105. Sales of cars rose 11.8% to 70,463. Total vehicles sales for the year increased 13.2% to 2,503,797 from 2,211,091.

Ford Motor Company (F) unit sales increased 10.1% to 209,447 from 190,191 vehicles a year ago. For the year, total unit sales increased 11% to 2,143,101 from 1,931,534 compared to a year ago period. Truck sales in the month increased 23.1% to 154,232 from 125,333.

Sales of passenger cars decreased 14.9% to 55,215 compared to 64,858 a year ago. In December, sales of the Fusion decreased 4.5% to total of 21,622. For the year-to-date Fusion sales increased 13.2% totaled 248,067 from 219,219.

Chrysler LLC sales in December soared 37.1% to 138,019 from 100,702 vehicles a year ago. Sales of cars surged 142.9% to 34,844 and light truck sales increased 19.5% to 103,175. For the year, total sales increased 26.2% to 1,369,114 from 1,085,211.

Nissan Annual Sales Rise 15%

Toyota Motor sales in December rose 0.4% to 178,131 from 177,488 in the same period a year earlier. Sales of the cars increased 4.4% to 95,726 from 91,667 and light trucks decreased 4% to 82,405 from 85,821 a year ago. For the year, total vehicles sales declined 6.7% to 1.64 million.

Honda sales in the month decreased 18.8% to 105,230 from 129,616 a year ago. For the year so far, sales decreased 6.8% to 1,147,285 from 1,230,480. Sales of cars in the month decreased 29.4% to 51,485 from 72,905 and sales of the light trucks fell 5.2% to 53,745 compared to 56,711 a year ago. For the year, total vehicles sales dropped 6.8% to 1.14 million.

Nissan Motor Company vehicles sales in the month increased 7.7% to 100,927 from 93,730 a year ago. For the year so far, sales increased 14.7% to 1.04 million from 0.91 million. December cars sales fell 0.2% and sales of the light trucks soared 23.3% from a year ago. For the year, total vehicles sales rose to 14.7% to 1.04 million.

Mitsubishi Motors vehicles December sales increased 3.2% to 5,032 compared with 4,874 units in the month of last year.

Sales for Mazda increased 4.1% to 22,353 compared to 21,479 in the year ago.

Daimler Sales Surge 27%, VW Sales Rise 23%

Volkswagen Group of America Inc sales soared 31.4% to 45,524 from 34,636 a year ago. Vehicles branded Audi sales increased 20%. Volkswagen surged 36.2% and Bentley sales soared to 60.9%. Total vehicles sales in the year increased 23.3% to 444,178 units.

Daimler AG sales in the month gained 27% to 28,010 from a year ago. Maybach declined 50% to 4 from 8 in the month a year ago. Sales of the Smart surged 24.6% to 710 from 570 a year ago. For the year total unit sales increased to 267,016.
