January retail sales were uneven across the 22 chains reporting monthly sales. Sales at Limited, Costco and Saks exceeded the industry average and apparel chain stores were weaker than expected on warmer weather.
Auto sales in January surged at the fastest pace in nearly four years and Chrysler Group and Volkswagen AG accelerated sales growth at 40% in the month. General Motors was the lone maker to report a decline in sales. Industry sales were the largest since May 2008.
