SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending June 28, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 404,000, an increase of 16,000 from the previous week''s revised figure of 388,000. The 4-week moving average was 390,500, an increase of 11,250 from the previous week''s revised average of 379,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent for the week ending June 21, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week''s unrevised rate of 2.4 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending June 21 was 3,116,000, a decrease of 19,000 from the preceding week''s revised level of 3,135,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,110,750, an increase of 8,750 from the preceding week''s revised average of 3,102,000.
The fiscal year-to-date average for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment for all programs is 2.913 million.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 368,876 in the week ending June 28, an increase of 10,503 from the previous week. There were 300,348 initial claims in the comparable week in 2007.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during the week ending June 21, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,860,521, an increase of 7,792 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.8 percent and the volume was 2,353,893.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending June 14.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,371 in the week ending June 21, an increase of 143 from the prior week. There were 1,507 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 16 from the preceding week.
There were 11,108 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 14, a decrease of 121 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 19,619, an increase of 440 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 14 were in Puerto Rico (4.5 percent), Alaska (3.3), Oregon (3.1), California (3.0), Michigan (3.0), Pennsylvania (3.0), New Jersey (2.8), Nevada (2.7), Rhode Island (2.7), Arkansas (2.6), and South Carolina (2.6).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 21 were in New Jersey (+6,998), California (+5,055), Iowa (+3,085), Massachusetts (+2,622), and Connecticut (+1,356), while the largest decreases were in Pennsylvania (-3,455), Ohio (-1,700), Illinois (-1,446), Alabama (-1,430), and North Carolina (-1,409).
