Summary
New orders for manufactured goods in May, up three consecutive months, increased $2.8 billion or 0.6 percent to $448.7 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau reported today. This was at the highest level since the series was first stated on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 1.3 percent April increase. Shipments, up four of the last five months, increased $0.3 billion or 0.1 percent to $446.4 billion. This was also at the highest level since the series was first stated on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 2.7 percent April increase. Unfilled orders, up twenty-seven of the last twenty-eight months, increased $7.1 billion or 0.9 percent to $810.1 billion. This was also at the highest level since the series was first stated on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 0.7 percent April increase. The unfilled orders-to-shipments ratio was 5.32, up from 5.27 in April. Inventories, up eight of the last nine months, increased $2.8 billion or 0.5 percent to $548.4 billion. This was also at the highest level since the series was first stated on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a slight April decrease. The inventories-to-shipments ratio was 1.23, up from 1.22 in April.
New Orders
New orders for manufactured durable goods in May, up following two consecutive monthly decreases, increased slightly to $213.5 billion, unchanged from the previously published increase. This followed a 1.0 percent April decrease.
New orders for manufactured nondurable goods increased $2.7 billion or 1.2 percent to $235.1 billion.
Shipments
Shipments of manufactured durable goods in May, down three of the last four months, decreased $2.4 billion or 1.1 percent to $211.2 billion, unchanged from the previously published decrease. This followed a 1.8 percent April increase.
Shipments of manufactured nondurable goods, up three consecutive months, increased $2.7 billion or 1.2 percent to $235.1 billion. This was also at the highest level since the series was first stated on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 3.5 percent April increase. This increase was led by petroleum and coal products, which increased $2.5 billion or 4.0 percent to $65.6 billion. Petroleum and coal products was also at the highest level since the series was first stated on a NAICS basis in 1992.
Unfilled Orders
Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in May, up twenty-seven of the last twenty-eight months, increased $7.1 billion or 0.9 percent to $810.1 billion, unchanged from the previously published increase. This was also at the highest level since the series was first stated on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 0.7 percent April increase.
Inventories
Inventories of manufactured durable goods in May, up ten of the last eleven months, increased $1.4 billion or 0.4 percent to $330.3 billion, unchanged from the previously published increase. This was also at the highest level since the series was first stated on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 0.6 percent April increase.
Inventories of manufactured nondurable goods, up six of the last seven months, increased $1.4 billion or 0.6 percent to $218.1 billion. This followed a 0.9 percent April decrease. Petroleum and coal products led the increase, up $0.8 billion or 2.1 percent to $39.9 billion.
By stage of fabrication, May materials and supplies increased 0.1 percent in durable goods and 1.2 percent in nondurable goods. Work in process increased 1.1 percent in durable goods and 3.9 percent in nondurable goods. Finished goods decreased slightly in durable goods and 1.1 percent in nondurable goods.
