Factory Orders Rise 1.2% in May

Inventories of manufactured nondurable goods, up following eight consecutive monthly decreases, increased slightly to $191.2 billion.
New orders for manufactured goods in May, up three of the last four months, increased $4.1 billion or 1.2% to $347.9 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau reported today. This followed a 0.5% April increase.

Jobless Claims Drop by 16,000

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 4.5% during the week ending June 20, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week.
In the week ending June 27, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 614,000, a decrease of 16,000 from the previous week''''s revised figure of 630,000. The 4-week moving average was 615,250, a decrease of 2,750 from the previous week''''s revised average of 618,000.

Unemployment Rate Rises to 9.5%

Employment in manufacturing fell by 136,000 over the month and has declined by 1.9 million during the recession.
Nonfarm payroll employment continued to decline in June -467,000, and the unemployment rate was little changed at 9.5%, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today.

Crude Oil Inventories Decline

Distillate fuel inventories increased by 2.9 million barrels, and are above the upper boundary of the average range for this time of year.
U.S. commercial crude oil inventories decreased by 3.7 million barrels from the previous week. At 350.2 million barrels, U.S. crude oil inventories are above the upper boundary of the average range for this time of year. Total motor gasoline inventories increased by 2.3 million barrels last week, and are in the lower half of the average range.

Construction Spending Decreases 0.9% in May

During the first 5 months of this year, construction spending amounted to $368.8 billion, 11.7% below the $417.5 billion for the same period in 2008.
The U.S. Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce announced today that construction spending during May 2009 was estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $964.0 billion, 0.9% below the revised April estimate of $972.5 billion. The May figure is 11.6% below the May 2008 estimate of $1,090.7 billion.

ISM Index Rises to 44.8%

ISM's New Orders Index registered 49.2% in June, 1.9 percentage points lower than the 51.1% registered in May.
Manufacturing contracted at a slower rate in June as the PMI registered 44.8%, which is 2 percentage points higher than the 42.8% reported in May. This is the 17th consecutive month of contraction in the manufacturing sector.
