Nonfarm Employment Declines 84,000 in August

Manufacturing employment fell by 61,000 in August.
The unemployment rate rose from 5.7 to 6.1% in August, and non- farm payroll employment continued to trend down -84,000, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. In August, employment fell in manufacturing and employment services, while mining and health care continued to add jobs. Average hourly earnings rose by 7 cents, or 0.4%, over the month.

Crude, Gasoline and Distillate Inventories Fall

Distillate fuel inventories fell last week, and are in the upper half of the average range for this time of year.
U.S. commercial crude oil inventories decreased by 1.9 million barrels from the previous week. At 303.9 million barrels, U.S. crude oil inventories are in the middle of the average range for this time of year. Total motor gasoline inventories decreased by 1.0 million barrels last week, and are near the lower boundary of the average range. Finished gasoline inventories increased last week while gasoline blending components inventories decreased during this same time.

Non-Manufacturing Index at 50.6%

ISM's Non-Manufacturing New Orders Index contracted in August for the third consecutive month.
In August, the NMI at 50.6% indicates growth in the non-manufacturing sector. A reading above 50% indicates the non-manufacturing sector economy is generally expanding; below 50% indicates the non-manufacturing sector is generally contracting.

Nonfarm Productivity Increases to 4.3%

Hourly compensation in the business sector grew at a 4% annual rate in the second quarter of 2008.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor today reported revised productivity data--as measured by output per hour of all person -for the second quarter of 2008. The seasonally adjusted annual rates of productivity change in the second quarter were: 4.3% in the business sector and 4.3% in the nonfarm business sector.

Jobless Claims Rise by 15,000

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3% during the week ending Aug. 23, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week.
In the week ending Aug. 30, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 444,000, an increase of 15,000 from the previous week''''s revised figure of 429,000. The 4-week moving average was 438,000, a decrease of 3,250 from the previous week''''s revised average of 441,250.

Energy and mining activity were strong and expanding in all of the Districts that reported on these sectors.
Manufacturing activity was weak or declining in most Districts but improved in others. New York reported some stabilization after months of decline, Kansas City reported a rebound after a weakening in June, and Minneapolis and San Francisco have made gains since the last report.

Factory Orders Rise 1.3% in July

Shipments, up six of the last seven months, increased $9.4 billion or 2.1% to $465.3 billion.
New orders for manufactured goods in July, up five consecutive months, increased $5.9 billion or 1.3% to $465.4 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau reported today. This was at the highest level since the series was first stated on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 2.1% June increase.

ISM Index Declines to 49.9% in August

ISM's New Orders Index registered 48.3% in August, 3.3 percentage points higher than the 45 percentage points registered in July.
Manufacturing contracted in August as the PMI registered 49.9%, 0.1percentage point lower than the 50% reported in July. A reading above 50 percent indicates that the manufacturing economy is generally expanding; below 50% indicates that it is generally contracting.

Construction Spending Decreases 0.6% in July

Spending on private construction was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $774.6 billion, 1.4% below the revised June estimate of $785.9 billion.
The U.S. Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce announced today that construction spending during July 2008 was estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $1,084.4 billion, 0.6% below the revised June estimate of $1,091.3 billion. The July figure is 4.8% below the July 2007 estimate of $1,139.4 billion. During the first 7 months of this year, construction spending amounted to $614.2 billion, 5.4% below the $649.5 billion for the same period in 2007.
