USDA: Corn Acreage Falls 8%

Soybean producers intend to plant 74.8 million acres in 2008, up 18% from last year, but 1 percent below the record high acreage in 2006.
Corn growers intend to plant 86.0 million acres of corn for all purposes in 2008, down 8% from last year when corn planted area was the highest since 1944. Expected acreage is down from last year in most States as favorable prices for other crops, high input costs for corn, and crop rotation considerations are motivating some farmers to plant fewer acres to corn.

Personal Income Rises 0.5% in February

Private wage and salary disbursements increased $14.8 billion in February, compared with an increase of $21.9 billion in January.
Personal income increased $56.0 billion, or 0.5%, and disposable personal income increased $48.7 billion, or 0.5%, in February, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Personal consumption expenditures increased $12.0 billion, or 0.1%. In January, personal income increased $30.4 billion, or 0.3%, DPI increased $43.7 billion, or 0.4%, and PCE increased $42.0 billion, or 0.4%, based on revised estimates.

Jobless Claims Drop by 9,000

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4% during the week ending March 15, a decrease of 0.1% from the prior week.
In the week ending March 22, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 366,000, a decrease of 9,000 from the previous week''''s revised figure of 375,000. The 4-week moving average was 358,000, an increase of 1,750 from the previous week''''s revised average of 356,250.

Gross Domestic Product Rises 0.6% in Q4 -Final

In the third quarter, real GDP increased 4.9%.
Real gross domestic product -- the output of goods and services produced by labor and property located in the United States -- increased at an annual rate of 0.6% in the fourth quarter of 2007, according to final estimates released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis.

Gasoline and Distillate Inventories Fall

Distillate fuel inventories decreased by 2.2 million barrels, and are in the lower half of the average range for this time of year.
U.S. commercial crude oil inventories remained unchanaged from the previous week. At 311.8 million barrels, U.S. crude oil inventories are in the middle of the average range for this time of year. Total motor gasoline inventories decreased by 3.3 million barrels last week, and are above the upper limit of the average range. Both finished gasoline inventories and gasoline blending components inventories decreased last week.

New Home Sales Decrease 1.8% in February

The median sales price of new houses sold in February 2008 was $244,100; the average sales price was $296,400.
Sales of new one-family houses in February 2008 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 590,000, according to estimates released jointly today by the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. This is 1.8% below the revised January rate of 601,000 and is 29.8% below the February 2007 estimate of 840,000.

Durable Goods Orders Decline 1.7% in February

Shipments of manufactured durable goods in February, down three of the last four months, decreased $6.0 billion or 2.8 percent to $210.5 billion.
New orders for manufactured durable goods in February decreased $3.6 billion or 1.7% to $210.6 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced today. This was the second consecutive monthly decrease and followed a 4.7% January decrease. Excluding transportation, new orders decreased 2.6%. Excluding defense, new orders decreased 1.6%.

Existing Home Sales Increase 2.9% in February

The national median existing-home price for all housing types was $195,900 in February, down 8.2% from a year earlier when the median was $213,500.
Existing-home sales – including single-family, townhomes, condominiums and co-ops – rose 2.9% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.03 million units in February from a pace of 4.89 million in January, but remain 23.8% below the 6.60 million-unit level in February 2007. The sales pace has been in a fairly narrow range since last September.

In the week ending March 15, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 378,000, an increase of 22,000 from the previous week''''s revised figure of 356,000. The 4-week moving average was 365,250, an increase of 6,000 from the previous week''''s revised average of 359,250.
