Alpha Natural Resources, Continental Resources and Whiting Petroleum rose after the release of earnings. The rising prices of coal, natural gas and crude oil lifted earnngs. Tidewater, an offshore supplier of marine services reported revenue rise of 13% but earnings fell. Net income slipped to $85.4 million compared to $87.6 million. Nam Tai, electronics manufacturing services provider fell after revenue fell 23%.

 
Net income slipped to $85.4 million or $1.63 per share compared with $87.6 million or $1.56 per share, a year earlier.

Tidewater stock (TDW: chart) fell $7.17 to $57.82.

White Mountains Insurance Group, Ltd, property and casualty insurer today reported total revenues for the first quarter of 2008 declined 34% to $937.9 million compared to $1,166.1 million a year ago.

Net loss in the quarter was $56.8 or $5.40 diluted earnings per share compared with net income of $92.2 million or $8.54 per share a year ago.

Book value in the quarter was essentially unchanged to $443.05 compared to $444.47 in the fourth quarter of last year and increased 9% to $414.61 from the first quarter of 2007.

White Mountain stock (WTM: chart) fell $20 to $469.81.

Whiting Petroleum Corporation, an independent oil and gas company engaged in acquisition, development, exploitation today reported first quarter of 2008 revenue rose 65% to $264.1 million from $159.9 million in the first quarter of 2007.

Net income increased to $62.3 million or $1.47 per share compared with $10.7 million or 29 cents per share, in the year-ago period.

Whiting Petroleum stock (WLL: chart) fell 15 cents to $76.81.
