Verizon Communications (
VZ: chart), mobile phone service based on subscribers, said that its fourth-quarter earnings declined to $1.03 billion, or 35 cents per share, compared with a year-ago profit of $1.67 billion, or 59 cents per share. The latest results include charges related to the sale of the company''s assets in the Dominican Republic and costs stemming from the spin-off of its directories publishing business. Excluding special items, the Dow component earned 62 cents per share in the latest quarter. On a continuing operations basis, Verizon said it earned $1.39 billion, or 48 cents per share, in the fourth quarter. Revenue climbed 26.1% to $22.6 billion from $17.93 billion in the same period a year earlier.
Midwest Banc Holdings Inc. (
MBHI: chart), banking and financial services group, said that its fourth-quarter net profit fell 56% to $2.9 million, or 12 cents per share, compared with $6.7 million, or 30 cent per share a year ago. Total interest income for the period rose 39% to $44.7 million. Excluding previously announced one-off items the company would have reported earnings of $6.9 million, or 28 cents per share.
Tesoro Corp. (
TSO: chart), oil refiner, said that its fourth-quarter earnings rose to $158 million, or $2.28 per share, compared with $69 million, or 97 cents per share, a year earlier. Revenue fell to $4.02 billion against last year''s $4.36 billion.
Schering-Plough Corp. (
SGP: chart), drugmaker, said that its fourth-quarter net income rose to $182 million, or 12 cents per share, compared with $104 million, or 7 cents per share in the year-ago period. The latest period includes charges of 5 cents per share. Revenue rose 14% to $2.7 billion from $2.32 billion a year ago.
Infineon Technologies (
IFX: chart), chipmaker, said that it swung to a first-quarter net profit of 120 million euros ($155 million), from a loss of 183 million euros in the year-ago quarter. Revenue jumped 27% to 2.13 billion euros compared with 1.67 billion euros a year ago. Infineon said revenue excluding memory chip division Qimonda, which it spun-off in late 2006, fell 4% to 958 million euros.
Mattel Inc. (
MAT: chart), toymaker, said that its fourth-quarter net income increased to $286.4 million, or 75 cents per share, compared with $279.2 million, or 69 cents per share, earned in the final three months of 2005. Quarterly sales for the El Segundo, Calif.-based toymaker reached $2.11 billion, up 14% from the prior year''s $1.84 billion; currency contributed two percentage points to the growth rate. Worldwide gross sales for the company''s Barbie doll brand were up 3%. Operating income came to $388.7 million, up 21%. Revenue totaled $5.65 billion, compared with $5.18 billion a year earlier.
Radware Ltd. (
RDWR: chart), hardware and software provider, said that its fourth quarter net earnings declined to $110,000, or a penny per share, compared with $2.35 million, or 12 cents per share, in the year-ago period. Excluding stock-based compensation, profit came in at 16 cents per share compared with 47 cents per share last year. Revenue climbed to $21.09 million versus $21.04 million in the same period a year earlier.
Silicom Ltd. (
SILC: chart), high-performance server and appliances networking solutions provider, said that its fourth-quarter net earnings increased to $1.07 million, or 20 cents per share, compared with $473,000, or 11 cents per share, in the year-ago period. Revenue jumped to $5.02 million compared to $3.13 million a year ago.
Gentex Corp. (
GNTX: chart), automotive and commercial fire protection products maker, posted higher fourth-quarter profit and sales thanks to increased demand for the company''s higher margin mirrors. Mirror shipments climbed 5% despite the steep automotive production cuts that slammed the domestic auto industry. Gentex reported a profit of $30.8 million, or 22 cents per share, compared with $29.6 million, or 19 cents per share, a year ago. Revenue jumped 8% to $149.6 million from $138.3 million in the year-ago period.
Hartmarx Corp. (
HMX: chart), apparel maker, said that its fourth-quarter earnings fell 95% on 4.4% higher revenue. For the quarter earnings were $331,000, or a penny per share, versus $7.3 million, or 20 cents per share, in the year-earlier period. Revenue rose to $163.4 million from $156.5 million in the same period a year earlier.
