Schlumberger Rises; Satyam, Wipro Fall

Satyam Computer Services first quarter net income increased 45% and Wipro Limited revenue in the first quarter rose 43% and earnings increased 13%. Satyam and Wipro fell after the earnings release, as both comanies issued cautious outolook. Oil field service provider, Schlumberger rose 4% after second quarter revenue rose 8% to $6.75 billion and earnings increased 13% to $1.42 billion. Closeout retailer Overstock.com fell on smaller loss than a year ago.

 
11:45AM New York – Software services exporters Satyam and Wipro fell after the earnings rose less than expected. Schlumberger gained on better than expected earnings.

Acme United Corporation, a supplier of cutting, measuring and safety products to the school, home, office and industrial markets reported second quarter sales increased 20% to $22.7 million from $19.0 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter increased 14% to $1.73 million or 47 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $1.52 million or 41 cents per share, a year ago.

Acme rose 10 cents to $13.65 in the morning trading. Acme United Corporation (ACU: chart) in the last one year traded as high as $16.84 in October 2007 and as low as $12.60 in March 2008. Based on the yesterday’s closing price the company has a market cap of $47.04 million.

Citigroup Inc, second quarter revenues declined 29% to $18.7 billion from $26.3 billion a year ago. Net loss in the quarter was $2.5 billion or 54 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $6.23 billion or $1.24 per share, a year ago.

Citigroup in the morning trading rose $1.97 to $19.95. Citigroup Inc (C: chart) in the last one year traded as high as $52.40 in July 2007 and as low as $14.01 in July 2008. Based on the yesterday’s closing price the company has a market cap of $94.34 billion.

Donegal Group Inc, a property and casualty insurance holding company reported second quarter revenues increased 11.1% to $93,970,947 from $84,605,176 a year ago. Net income in the quarter declined 56.45% to $6,892,918 or 28 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $10,780,956 or 43 cents per share, a year ago.

Donegal Group Inc (DGICA: chart) in the last one year traded as high as $18.10 in November 2007 and as low as $14.20 in July 2007. Based on the yesterday’s closing price the company has a market cap of $435.57 million.

Gateway Financial Holdings, Inc, a financial holding company reported second quarter sales increased 25.2% to $18.6 million from $14.8 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter was $2.0 million or 11 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $2.0 million or 17 cents per share, a year ago.

Gateway Financial Holdings rose 30 cents to $7.20 in the morning trading. Gateway Financial Holdings, Inc (GBTS: chart) in the last one year traded as high as $16.25 in September 2007 and as low as $5.40 in July 2008. Based on the yesterday’s closing price the company has a market cap of $87.42 million.

The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, Inc, engaged in the retail food business reported first quarter sales increased 41.37% to $2.9 billion from $1.7 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter was $2.2 million or 51 cents per diluted share compared to net loss of $65.1 million or $1.54 per share, a year ago.

Comparable store sales increased 3.2%, which excludes sales for Pathmark stores acquired in December 2007. Comparable store sales for Pathmark, measured during the same period, increased 3.1%.

The Great Atlantic & Pacific in the morning trading fell 60 cents to $23.25. The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, Inc (GAP: chart) in the last one year traded as high as $35.07 in July 2007 and as low as $19.85 in July 2008. Based on the yesterday’s closing price the company has a market cap of $1.37 billion.

Honeywell International Inc, diversified U.S. manufacturer reported second quarter sales increased 13% to $9.7 billion from $8.5 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 18.3% to $723 million or 96 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $611 million or 78 cents per share, a year ago.

Honeywell in the morning trading rose 14 cents to $51.00. Honeywell International Inc (HON: chart) in the last one year traded as high as $62.99 in May 2008 and as low as $46.67 in July 2008. Based on the yesterday’s closing price the company has a market cap of $37.71 billion.

LaBranche & Co. Inc, one of the largest market makers on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange reported second quarter revenues declined 59.09% to $37.1 million from $90.7 million a year ago. Net loss in the quarter was $21.3 million or 34 cents per diluted share compared to net loss of $368.9 million or $6.00 per share, a year ago.

LaBranche fell 47 cents to $7.43 in the morning trading. LaBranche & Co. Inc (LAB: chart) in the last one year traded as high as $8.12 in June 2008 and as low as $3.70 in March 2008. Based on the yesterday’s closing price the company has a market cap of $489.13 million.

Overstock.com, Inc, an online closeout retailer reported second quarter revenues gain 27% to $188.8 million from $149.0 million a year ago. Net loss in the quarter was $6.5 million or 28 cents per diluted share compared to net loss of $13.8 million or 58 cents per share, a year ago.

Overstock fell $7.61 to $20.16 in today’s trading. Overstock.com, Inc (OSTK: chart) in the last one year traded as high as $39.39 in October 2008 and as low as $8.61 in March 2008. Based on the yesterday’s closing price the company has a market cap of $629.76 million.

Satyam Computer Services Limited, India\''s fourth largest software services exporter reported first quarter net income rose 45% to 5.48 billion rupees or $128 million compared to net income of 3.78 billion rupees a year ago.

Satyam Computer Services fell 95 cents to $22.50 in today’s trading. Satyam Computer Services Limited (SAY: chart) in the last one year traded as high as $30.89 in October 2007 and as low as $20.02 in March 2008. Based on the yesterday’s closing price the company has a market cap of $7.88 billion.
