GenCorp Narrows its Quarterly Net Loss

Pfizer reported fourth-quarter net income more than tripled on nearly flat sales. Bank of Hawaii fourth-quarter profit rose 14% as the bank faced a lower tax rate and earned more income from charges and fees. Dr Reedy''s quarterly profit almost trebled as sales of generics in the key U.S. market surged. GenCorp reported a narrower fourth-quarter loss compared with a year-ago quarter that was weighed down by charges.

 
Bank of Hawaii Corp. (BOH: chart), financial services provider, said that its fourth-quarter net income increased to $50.9 million, or $1.01 per share, compared with $44.8 million, or 86 cents per share, earned in the final three months of 2005. Quarterly return on average assets and return on average equity both improved from the prior year, to 1.94% and 28.56%, respectively.

GenCorp Inc. (GY: chart), defense and aerospace contractor, reported a narrower fourth-quarter loss of $2.1 million or 4 cents per share, compared with $174.4 million, or $3.18 per share, in the year-earlier period. Continuing operations produced a loss of 2 cents per share versus earnings of 1 cent. Revenue declined to $167.3 million from $204.8 million in the same quarter a year ago as sales from the Atlas V and Titan programs fell.

Dr Reedy''s (RDY: chart), drugmaker, said that its third-quarter net profit more than tripled to $43 million compared with $14 million a year earlier. Revenue climbed to $350 million against $134 million in the same quarter a year earlier.

Pfizer Inc. (PFE: chart), drugmaker, reported fourth-quarter net income of $9.45 billion, or $1.32 per share, compared with $2.73 billion, or 37 cents per share, in the year-earlier period. Revenue was $12.6 billion versus $12.55 billion a year earlier. Adjusted fourth-quarter earnings fell 12% to 43 cents per share. Worldwide sales rose 15% in arthritis-pain drug Celebrex and 32% in the anti-psychotic medication Geodon, while sales of Lyrica, which treats pain from nerve damage, more than doubled.

Sify Ltd. (SIFY: chart), Internet provider, reported third-quarter net earnings of $940,000, or breakeven per American Depositary receipt compared with a last-year net loss of $240,000, or breakeven per ADR. Revenue climbed 16% to $31.5 million versus $27.2 million in the same quarter last year.

Lee Enterprises Inc. (LEE: chart), newspaper publisher, said that its fiscal first-quarter profit rose 17% to $26.7 million, or 58 cents per share, compared with a profit of $22.8 million, or 47 cents per share, in the prior year. Revenue rose 2.8% to $300.5 million versus $292.4 million a year ago. Total advertising revenue rose 2.3%, with modest gains in retail and national advertising, as well as a 53% spike in online ad revenue. Circulation revenue rose 1.3%. National ad revenue slipped 0.6%. Circulation revenue rose 3.7%, as the company''s newspapers had one more Sunday in the month than in December 2005.

Movie Gallery Inc. (MOVI: chart), movie and video game rental chain, reported a third-quarter loss of $36.1 million, or $1.13 per share compared to a loss of $12.5 million, or 39 cents per share in the year-ago period. Revenue increased by 1.8% to $583 million versus $572.4 million in the same quarter a year earlier.

A.O. Smith Corp. (AOS: chart), water heating equipment maker, said that its fourth-quarter net income increased by 18% to $18.9 million, or 61 cents per share, compared with $16 million, or 52 cents per share, a year earlier, partly helped by lower tax costs. Earnings from continuing operations reached at 62 cents per share versus 52 cents per share a year earlier. Revenue jumped 25% to $543.6 million from $434 million in the year-ago period. Sales of water products rose 50% to $342.4 million, while sales of electrical products fell 3.2% to $201.9 million.
