Ciena Records Better-Than –Expected Profit

Ciena reported a higher quarterly profit on higher revenue and lower expenses. Winnebago Industries recorded 46% lower quarterly profit hurt by lower consumer demand for motor homes. Costco Wholesale reported first-quarter net earnings rise of 9.8% on 9.4% higher revenue, helped by a big jump in membership fees.

 
Ciena Corp. (CIEN: chart), supplies communications networking equipment, software, and services to telecommunications service providers, said that its fourth-quarter earnings rose to $13.1 million, or 14 cents per share, compared with a year-ago loss of $252.9 million, or $3.06 per share. Last year''s results included a total charge of $222.3 million related to impairment of goodwill and long-lived assets. Revenue jumped 35.3% to $160 million versus $118.2 million in the same period a year earlier.

Winnebago Industries Inc. (WGO: chart), manufactures and sells motor homes and self-contained recreation vehicles, reported first-quarter net income of $7.9 million, or 25 cents per share, down from $14.6 million, or 44 cents per share in the year-ago period. Revenue dropped 13% to $201.8 million, down 13% from $232.3 million a year ago.

Costco Wholesale Corp. (COST: chart), warehouse club operator, reported first-quarter profit of $236.9 million, or 51 cents per share, compared with $215.8 million, or 45 cents per share, in the year-earlier period. Revenue jumped to $14.15 billion from $12.93 billion a year earlier. Net sales rose 9% to $13.85 billion. Same-store sales, revenue from stores open at least a year, eliminating the effects of acquisitions and divestitures, climbed 4%.

Argon ST Inc. (STST: chart), electronic intelligence and communications systems maker, said that its fourth-quarter net earnings declined to $4.1 million, or 18 cents per share, compared with $6.06 million, or 29 cents per share, in the year-ago period. Revenue decreased to $66.1 million from $83.7 million in the fourth quarter last year.

Beacon Roofing Supply Inc. (BECN: chart), residential and nonresidential roofing materials distributor, said that its fourth-quarter net earnings increased to $14.6 million, or 32 cents per share, compared with $10.4 million, or 25 cents per share,in the same quarter a year earlier. Revenue climbed to $431.3 million from $231.2 million on the year-ago period.

Lehman Brothers (LEH: chart), financial services provider, said that its fourth-quarter net income climbed 22% to $1 billion, or $1.72 per share, compared with $823 million, or $1.38 per share in the year-ago period. Revenue jumped 23% to $4.5 billion in the fourth quarter last year. The company''s revenue exceeded the third quarter tally by 8%.

Bear Stearns Cos. (BSC: chart), investment house, reported a fourth-quarter net income of $562.8 million, or $4 per share compared with $401.5 million, or $2.90 per share, a year earlier. Revenue climbed 28% to $2.4 billion versus $1.9 billion a year earlier.
