Profit decreased to $517 million due to higher fuel costs.
Revenue rose to $4.25 billion from $3.88 billion a year ago. The increase in revenue came despite a falling number of carloads on network, which is evidence of strong pricing. Fuel costs jumped to $960 million from $703 million a year earlier. Total carloads reached 2.6 million, down from 2.677 million in the same period in 2006. The company plans capital expenditures of $2.45 billion in 2008, down from the $2.59 billion it spent in 2007.

SanDisk Fourth Quarter Earnings Call

The net income was $106 million or 45 cents per share as against a net loss of $35 million or 17 cents per share in the prior year quarter.
The maker of flash storage card devices reported revenue of $1.25 billion, reflecting 11% price decline and lower megabyte growth in the quarter. Mobile business, which was SanDisk’s highlight of 2007, accounted for 35% of total revenue and mobile product unit sales more than doubled over last year, led by continued strength in microSD cards in the retail and OEM channels. For Q1, the firm is forecasting total revenue to be between $775 million and $875 million.

Yahoo! Fourth Quarter Earnings Call

Profit fell compared to the same period a year earlier, amid an ongoing reorganization of the troubled Internet company.
Yahoo’s revenue rose 8% to $1.83 billion. Net sales, which exclude payments Yahoo makes to other Web sites to acquire traffic, rose to $1.4 billion from $1.2 billion. Total O&O marketing services revenues grew 20% year over year, driven by promising trends in both display and search. The company produced $242 million of fees revenue, up 14% from the same period last year. The company will cut 1,000 jobs from its workforce of 11,400 and expects to take a charge of up to $25 million in Q1.

Piper Jaffray Fourth Quarter Earnings Call

Piper Jaffray earned $15.1 million, or 91 cents per share compared with profit of $20.6 million, or $1.15 per share a year ago.
Piper Jaffray profit declined 27% while revenue, booked through investment banking and brokerage fees, dropped marginally to $146.5 million from $146.6 million last year. The company helped 40 companies make a total of $7 billion by selling stock and it also advised on 19 corporate acquisitions totaling $6.3 billion. Revenue from selling and trading of bonds lost 42% as fixed income suffered from the unfavourable market conditions.

FPL Group Fourth Quarter Earnings Call

Profit decreased 16% to $224 million, hit by losses from trading in energy markets.
The wind power company’s revenue was $3.7 billion, failing to meet expectations of $3.9 billion. Items included an after-tax loss of $58 million for hedges. Adjusted earnings rose to 71 cents a share from 63 cents a share. In December the company received regulatory approval to implement extended power uprights at all four existing Florida nuclear units. FPL expects 2008 full-year adjusted earnings per share to be between $3.83 and $3.93, and 2009 earnings per share of $4.15 to $4.35.

Canadian National Railway Company Fourth Quarter Earnings Call

Net income rose 66.9% to C$833 million due to an income-tax benefit and other special items.
Revenue fell 3% to C$1.94 billion from C$2 billion a year ago. Results included a benefit of C$0.57 per share from a deferred income-tax recovery, as well as C$0.21 per share from asset sales. Excluding such special items, Canadian National Railway''s profit was flat at C$0.90 per share. The company faced strong headwind from a weak U.S. housing market, a stronger Canadian dollar, a strike and weather-related issues in Western Canada.

Corning Fourth Quarter Earnings Call

The earnings in the fourth quarter were $717 million or 45 cents as against $646 million or 41 cents in the prior year.
The provider of technology based products reported revenue of $1.58 billion, an increase of 16% from $1.37 billion in the prior year. As per the firm’s preliminary market research data, about 27 million units of LCD televisions were shipped in Q4 compared to 20 million in Q3, leading to penetration of 44% as against 39% in the sequential quarter. The first quarter EPS before special items is expected to be between 41 cents and 43 cents, representing a 45% to 54% increase over prior year.

Kimberly Clark Fourth Quarter Earnings Call

Earnings dropped 6% to $456 million or $1.07 a share, adversely impacted by significant cost inflation, which totaled $115 million.
The health, hygiene and well-being global brands firm reported a 10% rise in sales to $4.76 billion from $4.31 billion in the prior year on continued strong growth in developing and emerging markets, where sales climbed in excess of 20%. The firm continued to aggressively reduce costs through the FORCE and strategic cost reduction efforts. It will invest more to strengthen key capabilities in innovations, marketing and customer development, to deliver sustainable growth into the future.

Lockheed Martin Fourth Quarter Earnings Call

Profit rose to $799 million, helped by strong sales of electronic warfare and space systems.
The defense contractor’s revenue was flat at $10.84 billion. Aeronautics sales dipped 11% to $3 billion, which Lockheed attributed to lower sales volumes in its F-16, F-35 and C-130J transport plane programs. Lockheed''s space division saw sales grow 7% to $2 billion. The company raised its forecast for 2008 earnings per share to a range of $7.05 per share to $7.25 per share, from a range of $6.95 to $7.15 previously.

Black & Decker Fourth Quarter Earnings Call

Earnings rose 96% to $187 million or $2.94 a share, from $96 million or $1.38 a share in 2006 on strong results from international and tax benefits.
The manufacturer and marketer of power tools and accessories, hardware and home improvement products, and technology-based fastening systems realised a 3% increase in revenue from $1.6 billion in the prior year to $1.7 billion, though organic volume was flat and price was negative. The firm repurchased 5.4 million shares of its stock in 2007 as well as an additional 2.0 million shares in early 2008.
