The movie sound company earned $46.4 million on sales of $154.3 million in the quarter vs. $29.7 million on sales of $119.6 million a year ago.
In the fiscal third quarter Dolby Laboratories saw its sales and profit rise from last year and added it expects sales for the fiscal year of between $605 million and $625 million and a profit between $181 million and $190 million. Sales climbed 29% from last year''s third quarter and the gross margin rose 600 basis points to 89.6%.

Despite the ongoing economic challenges, the management remains optimistic about the business and the achievement of the full year guidance.
The real estate brokerage firm posted Q2 net revenues of $30.4 million, a dip of 2.7% from Q2 fiscal 2007. The net transaction revenues, exclusive referral and other income, were $29.9 million, down 2.1% from the year ago period. The net loss for the period was $1.7 million versus a net loss of $1.0 million in the year ago period. The pro forma loss per share, excluding the effect of stock-based compensation, was 4 cents for Q2 versus 1 cent net income per share for the same period a year ago.

The designer, marketer and distributor of athletic footwear and apparel realized a 17% rise in revenue to $5.4 billion on a successful Olpmpic and Euro campaign, but this failed to stem a 10% drop in net income to $511 million or $1.03 a share on higher expenses attributed to the former.

Harsh retail climate prompts focus on long term survival through internal investments while applying the strictest return hurdles to capital projects.
The retailer reported sales of $4.6 billion, up 4.8% on the strength of the Internet business. Operating earnings were $537.4 million compared to $550.4 million or for the comparable period a year ago, a decrease of 2.4% on higher cost of goods.

The manufacturer of adhesives and other specialty chemical products reported a 3% rise in revenue to $362 million, though income fell 19% to $22 million, or 44 cents a share on rising costs. Firm continues to invest in expanding its geographic presence with the acquisition of Egymelt in Egypt.

The coal company reported revenue of $826.8 million, up 34%, though this failed to stem a net loss of $93.3 million or $1.16 a share due to litigation charges. Global supply for coal remains tight while demand is increasing.

Speedway Motorsports Earnings Call, Second Quarter 2008

Despite higher gas prices, attendances have remained fairly constant, though advance ticket sales are slowing.
The promoter of motorsport entertainment reported an 18% rise in revenue to $212.8 million as income positively responded by 17% to $47 million or $1.08 a share. Admissions, concessions and souvenir merchandising revenues negatively impacted by declines in consumer spending.

Move, Inc. Earnings Call, Second Quarter 2008

The company reported a second-quarter net loss of $2.2 million, or a penny per share vs. net income of $4.4 million, or 3 cents per share a year ago.
Move, which offers real-estate listings and other web information, added that income from continuing operations was $2.1 million, down from $7.7 million in the year-earlier quarter. Revenue declined to $61.4 million from $62.5 million. Total operating expenses climbed 7.3% to $49.6 million, due to a 33.8% jump in general and administrative expenses to $19.4 million. Move has started a plan to cut total operating expenses by more than $20 million by the end of 2008.

Bed Bath & Beyond Earnings Call, Second Quarter 2008

Net income fell to $119.3 million, or 46 cents a share, for the second quarter, from $147 million, or 55 cents a share, a year ago.
The home furnishings retailer reported net sales for the quarter increased 5% to $1.85 billion from $1.77 billion. Same-store sales dropped by about 0.1%, compared with an increase of 2.2% a year earlier. Profit margin declined to 39.9% from 41.4 percent a year ago. For the third quarter, Bed Bath & Beyond expects net earnings of 41 cents to 47 cents per share compared with the 52 cents it posted in the third quarter last fiscal year.

Kroger Earnings Call, Second Quarter Fiscal 2008

During the quarter, there were more signs that the weak economy continues to drive consumer behavior, evident in some changes in the sales mix.
The retail grocery chain reported total net sales of $18.1 billion for the second quarter, an increase of 11.9% compared with the same period in the previous year. Identical supermarket sales increased 9.7% with fuel and 4.7% without fuel versus the same quarter fiscal 2007. The management announced net earnings for the second quarter totaling $276.5 million compared with $267.3 million in the second quarter last year. The management confirmed the fiscal 2008 EPS guidance of $1.85 to $1.90.
