Target Posts Strong Sales and Increase in Operating Earnings

Target Corp., discount retailer, said Thursday that net income declined sharply in the second quarter versus a year ago, when the company’s results included a hefty gain on the sale of the Marshall Field's chain. Earnings from continuing operations increased 50% mainly due to strong sales and margins.

Deutsche Telekom's Net Rises 63%

Deutsche Telekom AG Thursday reported a 63% jump in second-quarter net profit mainly due to growth at the company’s U.S. and German wireless operations and high-speed Internet businesses. According to the company, sales growth was led by the strong development of the mobile-phone business in particular. Germany's telecom company owns wireless business T-Mobile and Internet business T-Online besides its traditional fixed-line activities.

Federated Department Stores Posts Double Quarterly Profit

Federated Department Stores Inc., owner of Bloomingdale's and Macy's, announced on Wednesday that its second-quarter earnings nearly doubled. The second-quarter 2005 numbers were in line with analysts' profit expectations. The company added that it expects sales growth to pick up in the second half of the year.

Lazard's Quarterly Profit Jumps 30%

Lazard Ltd., an investment bank specializing in mergers-and-acquisitions advising and asset management, on Wednesday announced that its second-quarter earnings climbed nearly 30% on surging deal activity. The 157-year old banking partnership that went public in May added that mergers-and-acquisition revenues at the company climbed 35% for the quarter.

MCI Inc. reported it swung to a profit in the second quarter despite a 10% decline in revenue, as the company’s cost-reducing measures paid off. Analysts had expected the telecommunications company, which is being acquired by Verizon Communications Inc., to report a net loss of 1 cent a share for the latest quarter.

The fast-food giant McDonald's Corp.'s same-store sales at its namesake restaurants world-wide rose 4.9% in July, boosted by solid growth in Europe. U.S. same-store sales rose 4.9%, recording the 28th month of sales gains in a row, while European sales grew 5.3%, due to positive performance in France and Germany.

Nortel Networks Corp., the Canadian telecom-equipment maker struggling to recover from an accounting scandal, reported a higher second-quarter profit as revenue rose 10%, bolstered by surging sales of the company’s enterprise and wireless gear. Besides its accounting problems, Nortel has been suffering tight competition in the telecom-equipment industry.

Pixar Animation Studios posted a steep decline in second-quarter net income and revenue, blaming the weaker results on the tough comparisons with the year-ago strong performance of 'Finding Nemo' on home video. Pixar's earnings met the company's earlier projections, which were recently cut due to higher-than-anticipated returns of the home-video version of the company's most recent film 'The Incredibles'.
