Ford Posts Record Loss

Pantry first-quarter earnings tumbles, while Fiat SpA and Potash record higher quarterly profit.
Agere Systems swung to a profit in the first quarter as operating costs fell by nearly a quarter. Ford Motor lost a staggering $12.7 billion in 2006 came amid slumping sales and huge restructuring costs. Pantry first-quarter earnings tumbled because gasoline sales were less profitable. Fiat SpA net profit soared as the core auto division posted a nearly five-fold earnings gain. Potash said stronger sales of its phosphate and potash fertilizers fueled a 59% increase in fourth-quarter earnings.

Southern and Union Pacific enjoy higher quarterly earnings, while Bristol-Myers Squibb posts quarterly net loss.
Union Pacific reported a 64% jump in fourth-quarter net income because of greater efficiencies and strong demand for the coal and agricultural products it ships. Southern reported higher fourth-quarter earnings on increased electric sales and growth in company’s wholesale market margins. Dow Jones & Co. reported sharply higher fourth-quarter earnings on special gains from the sale of several newspapers, an acquisition and stronger ad sales at The Wall Street Journal.

eBay Soars on Earnings

Bottomline posts net loss, Westell Technologies net earnings declined, while Sherwin-Williams and Rohm & Haas gain.
EBay reported that fourth-quarter profit increased 24% from the same period last year thanks to scorching holiday sales. Sherwin-Williams fourth-quarter net income rose 31%, helped by architectural paint sales to contractors and industrial maintenance product sales. Rohm & Haas Co. said Thursday its fourth-quarter profit increased 31% on higher sales of electronic materials and coatings, which offset lower sales in its salt division.

First Cash Financial Services, SAP AG and Allegheny Technologies record higher quarterly profit.
Corning posted a profit in the fourth quarter. First Cash Financial Services stronger pawnshop sales and revenue from company’s new auto dealership business drove a 26% increase in fourth-quarter profit. SAP AG fourth-quarter net profit rose 29%, but the company was disappointed by software sales growth. Allegheny Technologies fourth-quarter profit rose 41% on improved sales of high-performance metals and flat-rolled products segments.

Yahoo Posts a 61% Dip in Profit

TD Banknorth and Piper Jaffray enjoy higher quarterly profit, while ConocoPhillips earnings fall 13%.
Yahoo reported a 61% dip in profit depending on advertising for most of their revenue. ConocoPhillips fourth-quarter earnings fell 13% on lower natural gas prices and shrinking gasoline margins. TD Banknorth fourth-quarter profit rose as results were helped by gains from an acquisition. Piper Jaffray fourth-quarter profit climbed 26% from last year, on strong revenue from providing equity and fixed-income financing, as well as advisory services on mergers and acquisitions.

TCF Financial records an 18% fall in fourth-quarter profit, Ezcorp first-quarter profit surges 44.4%, while Vertrue posts higher net income.
TCF Financial reported an 18% fall in fourth-quarter profit after net non-interest losses widened by almost a half. Vertrue reported that higher sales pushed company’s second-quarter net income up 13%.Ezcorp first-quarter profit surged 44.4% on sharply higher payday loan and credit service fees. Sun Microsystems returned to profitability after years of red ink, thanks to the growing popularity of the company’s corporate computers and newest operating system.

PNC Financial Services Group fourth-quarter profit rose, helped by higher revenue from its brokerage and asset management units. BlackRock fourth-quarter profit more than doubled, primarily due to its acquisition of Merrill Lynch & Co.''s asset-management business. Virginia Commerce Bancorp fourth-quarter profit rose 15% on lending growth. Susquehanna Bancshares fourth-quarter earnings dropped 23% as income from mortgage loan fees and charges fell sharply.

D.R. Horton and Tellabs record lower quarterly earnings, while Coach reports better-than-expected second-quarter profit.
Coach reported better-than-expected quarterly earnings, helped by strong full-priced sales of company’s handbags in the holiday season. D.R. Horton earnings fell 64% as it wrote down the value of assets and forfeited land deposits. Tellabs reported a 68% fall in quarterly earnings and forecast another weak quarter as telecommunications carriers merged and cut back on capital spending. Xerox fourth-quarter profit dropped 24%, pulled down by a higher restructuring charge.

Rayonier fourth-quarter earnings slid 2% on lower wood products sales, hurt by weak prices. Johnson & Johnson posted a 3.5% increase in fourth-quarter profit as higher sales were mostly offset by costs of a major acquisition. EMC fourth-quarter more than doubled and beat the estimates of Wall Street analysts. United Technologies fourth-quarter profit rose 38%, as robust demand for aerospace and commercial construction offset a weak housing market.

Pfizer reported fourth-quarter net income more than tripled on nearly flat sales. Bank of Hawaii fourth-quarter profit rose 14% as the bank faced a lower tax rate and earned more income from charges and fees. Dr Reedy''s quarterly profit almost trebled as sales of generics in the key U.S. market surged. GenCorp reported a narrower fourth-quarter loss compared with a year-ago quarter that was weighed down by charges.
