Earnings: Verizon and Humana Rise

Verizon edged higher after it reported net 1.5 million additions of subscribers and stable churn rate. Humana earnings and sales rise 12%.
Verizon reported first quarter revenue rise of 5% to $23.8 billion and operating income gain of 14% to 57 cents per share. The company added 1.5 million net customers and churn rate in the quarter was 1.19%. Medical Insurer, Humana rose 12% to $6.96 billion and earnings per share gained 12% to 47 cents. Mexico based Femsa SA reported revenue rise of 8.4% and robust volume rise of 7%.

Citrix Revenues Rise 22%, FNF Profit Falls

FMC Corp. earnings for the quarter increased thanks to strong performance across all of the company's business segments.
Citrix Systems saw quarterly revenue climb on growth in the company’s application virtualization business. Product license revenue increased 20% from a year ago to $147 million. Fidelity National Financial said total revenue for the quarter was $1.14 billion, down from $1.37 billion a year earlier. Net income was $27.2 million or 13 cents a share, down 67% from a year ago.

Amazon and Chipotle Mexican Grill Top Estimates

Amazon’s quarterly net sales climbed 37%; Chipotle Mexican Grill’s revenue rose 29.3% to $305.3 million from $236.1 million a year ago.
Amazon.com net income rose to $143 million or $0.34 per share, from $111 million, or $0.26 per diluted share last year. Net sales increased to $4.13 billion in the first quarter, from $3.02 billion a year ago. Chipotle Mexican Grill reported net income for the first quarter was $17.3 million or $0.52 per share, compared to $12.4 million or $0.38 per share for the year-ago quarter. The chain’s same store sales increased 10.2% in the quarter.

Aetna Net Falls, AutoNation's Earnings Drop 37%

Aetna’s net was $431.6 million or 85 cents per share vs. $434.6 million or 81 cents a year ago; AutoNation's revenue slid 7% on lower vehicle sales.
Aetna reported a lower quarterly net income on capital losses amid solid membership growth and premium-rate strength. The company’s medical membership rose by 614,000 to 17.467 million, while pharmacy membership climbed by 219,000 to 10.951 million and dental membership increased by 334,000 to 14.166 million. AutoNation’s first-quarter net income fell to $56 million or 31 cents per share vs. $83 million or 39 cents a year ago. Revenue slid to $4 billion from $4.3 billion last year.

ABB Net Doubles, 3M Beats Views

ABB’s net profit rose 87% to $1 billion, ahead of estimates; 3M Co. reported first quarter sales growth of 8.9% from a year ago to $6.5 billion.
Swiss engineering group ABB almost doubled its first-quarter net profit and reiterated its 2008 guidance thanks to increasing global demand for power infrastructure. Orders grew 28% to $10.94 billion from $8.56 billion a year ago. 3M Co. posted first-quarter earnings of $988 million, or $1.38 a share. The company''s industrial and transportation business sales climbed 17.1% to $2.1 billion in the quarter.

Pfizer Profit Drops 18%

Revenues fell 5% to $11.8 billion vs. $12.5 billion a year ago as revenues from Norvasc and Zyrtec fell by $556 million and $344 million respectively.
Pfizer’s profitability was adversely affected by the loss of U.S. exclusivity of Norvac and Zyrtec. Research and development expenses associated with the acquisitions of CovX and Coley Pharmaceutical Group also affected earnings. Pfizer expects revenues to drop to $49 billion from $47 billion in 2007.

China Mobile Profit Rises 37.2%

Operating revenue advanced 19.7% year-on-year to Rmb 93.02 billion from Rmb 77.7 billion a year ago as net additional subscribers rose by 33.9%.
The world’s largest mobile carrier China Mobile continued to focus particularly on expansion of the rural market, which naturally increased its net additional subscribers by 33.9% year-on-year to 7.60 million. At the end of March, the company’s subscriber base rose to 392.14 million. Average revenue per minute of usage also fell from Rmb 0.19 per minute in the comparable period last year to Rmb 0.17 per minute.

JFE Holdings Profit Declines 12.6%

Operating income slumped 2.1% to 502 billion yen from 513 billion yen a year ago on rising raw material costs.
Japan’s second biggest steel-maker JFE Holdings net sales in the crude steel business rose to 34.27 million tons on strong demand from domestic manufacturing and exports of high-end products. Net sales in the engineering business gained to 31.42 billion yen as sales to the private sector improved.

Boeing Earnings Rise 32%

Boeing revenue rose 4% in the quarter and earnings surged 32%. The company expects to deliver between 475 and 480 aircrafts in 2008.
Boeing first quarter revenue rose 4% to $16 billion, earnings increased 38% to $1.2 billion or earnings per share increased to $1.62 or $1.2 billion from $1.13 or $877 million. Operating cash flow more than doubled to $1.9 billion. Backlog reached a record $346 billion. Total company backlog at quarter-end increased 32% to a record of $346 billion. Boeing reaffirmed its guidance for 2008 between $5.70 and $5.85 per share and for 2009 between $6.80 and $7.00.

CME Earnings Rise 118%

CME reported earnings gain after the merger of two commodities exchages but the stock fell 7%.
CME Group, operator of CBOT and CME exchanges reported first quarter revenue rise of 88% to $625 million and earnings gain of 118% to $284 and earnings per share increase of 42% to $5.25. The merger of two exchanges helped the group to lower certain costs but the earnings disappointed analysts. Average trading volume of contract traded on the exchage surged 30% to 13 million from a year ago.
