Hospira fourth-quarter profit surged 78%, thanks to reduced expenses and increased sales. NRG Energy swung to a loss in the fourth quarter despite a surge in revenue, on the back of a hefty charge related to hedges. Sprint Nextel fourth-quarter profits rose 33% on stronger revenue, but the company continued to lose high-quality subscribers. StarTek fourth-quarter earnings per share fell 27% on 4.4% lower revenue.

Mine Safety Appliances fourth-quarter profit fell 19% on higher costs, but topped Wall Street''s consensus targets. Dynegy swung to a loss of $58 million in the fourth quarter as revenue fell and the company absorbed costs related to a financial restructuring. Foster Wheeler swung to a fourth-quarter profit as revenue jumped. RadioShack fourth-quarter profit jumped 64% with lower costs more than offsetting a decline in revenue and same-store sales.

GulfMark Offshore fourth-quarter profit more than tripled as the company''s fleet fetched higher average contract rates.
