Openwave Systems widens its quarterly net loss, Synergx Systems swings to a net loss, while Qiao Xing Universal Telephone posts higher profit.
Openwave Systems first-quarter net loss widened as revenue fell for revenue costs and expense rose. Synergx posted a decrease in fourth-quarter revenues and profit, resulted from lower shipments of transit products that reflected a lower level of orders and the timing of releases required by customers. Cohesant Technologies reported record sales, while quarterly profit fell 40% on investments in developing products. Qiao Xing Universal Telephone recorded higher quarterly profit.

Worthington Industries second-quarter profit declines 31%, while ConAgra Foods achieves 44% profit rise.
Worthington Industries second-quarter profit fell 31% as demand for steel processing and metal framing weakened. Second-quarter profit jumped 44% for packaged-food company ConAgra Foods as the company sold off business units and improved margins. General Mills posted better-than-expected second-quarter earnings on strong sales of new, higher-priced products.

Carnival and Commercial Metals enjoy a quarterly profit rise, while International Assets Holding records a net loss versus net income in the last-year
International Assets Holding swung to a fourth-quarter loss, hurt by volatile commodity prices. A.G. Edwards profit jumped 52% in the latest quarter as clients of the brokerage firm poured more money into fee-based accounts. Carnival fourth-quarter profit rose 24% as higher cruise capacity and ticket prices offset increased fuel costs. Commercial Metals first-quarter profit rose 23%, helped by strength in nonresidential construction.

CarMax Doubles Its Third-Quarter Income

Family Dollar Stores and Actuant enjoy higher quarterly profit, while Tecumseh Products third-quarter loss widens.
Actuant first-quarter profit rose 18%, helped by sales of its industrial tools. CarMax nearly doubled its third-quarter income on strong sales to the wholesale market and increased demand for trucks and sport utility vehicles. Tecumseh Products third-quarter loss widened, due mostly to restructuring in its engine and power train segment. Family Dollar Stores first-quarter net income grew 6% as customers spent more per store visit.

Mikron''s fourth-quarter earnings were higher than the same quarter of fiscal year 2005 due primarily to a more favorable product mix and higher sales volume. Steelcase third-quarter earnings more than doubled, due mostly to gains in international markets. Joy Global fourth-quarter earnings increased 52%, as demand overseas for company’s underground equipment offset weakness in the U.S. coal market.

John B. Sanfilippo & Son reported a wider first-quarter loss as the company missed the minimum quarterly earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization requirement under its long-term financing facility. Piedmont Natural Gas widened its fourth-quarter net loss on lower revenue due to warmer weather and customer conservation. Goldman Sachs Group quarterly earnings nearly doubled on strong growth in almost every business. Dollar General swung to a loss in the third quarter as it took charges for changes in its inventory plan and store closings. Best Buy reported lower-than-expected quarterly profit as the company cut prices on flat-panel TVs to boost sales at the start of the holiday shopping season. Imperial Sugar swung to fourth-quarter profit on widened margins mainly due to higher sales prices.
